Two men arrested as fight moves from Amherst parking lot to apartment complex

Detective Jamie Reardon said officers first responded at 8:43 p.m. after getting a report that six to 10 people were fighting in the parking lot at the Amherst Carriage Shops, 233 North Pleasant St.

The fight spilled out of the parking lot and toward Pray Street, with one of the combatants fleeing after being struck in the face. He was found a short time later near Kellogg Avenue and declined medical attention, police said.

A second combatant with scrapes on his knees, and in possession of a folding knife, told police he was OK.

Milton E. Rivera, 21, of Springfield, was arrested at the Carriage Shops parking lot on a warrant, Reardon said.

Reardon said police were called again at 9:26 p.m. to Village Park apartments at 497 East Pleasant St., where many of the same people were continuing to fight, and several had knives.

After stopping and searching a vehicle at the scene with possible combatants inside, a 20-year-old man and 16-year-old boy, both from Amherst, were summoned to court on charges of being minors in possession of alcohol. And they, along with a 21-year-old Hadley man, were issued tickets for possession of less than ounce of marijuana.

Reardon said Francisco Rodriguez, 52, of 110 Logtown Road, refused to calm down and go back inside, but instead tried to agitate those who were fighting.

Rodriguez was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct, Reardon said.

More people may be arrested or summoned to court. “We’re still investigating if more charges will come,” Reardon said.
