Joseph Smith of Brooklyn arrested in Whately on drug trafficking charges
WHATELY — A Brooklyn, N.Y., man was arrested on Interstate Route 91 in Whately earlier this week on charges related to drug trafficking.
Joseph Smith, 28, was arrested by Massachusetts State Police at 7:35 p.m. Monday on charges of trafficking heroin, possession with intent to distribute a class B substance (crack cocaine), and conspiracy to violate narcotics laws.
According to a press release issued by state police, Trooper Charles Murphy stopped a northbound car on Route 91 for on an undisclosed motor vehicle violation. After asking the four occupants, including Smith, to get out of the car, Murphy allegedly found items in the vehicle consistent with narcotics activity. A female passenger admitted that she was transporting narcotics for Smith, police said, and handed over a package believed to contain heroin and crack cocaine.
The other three occupants will be summoned to Franklin District Court to face charges of narcotics violations, according to state police.
