Second teen arrested in alleged skateboard beating in Northampton

The 15-year-old boy, whose named was not released because he is a juvenile, was arrested about 3 p.m. Friday on a charge of aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Another 13-year-old boy was arrested immediately after the incident at 4:30 p.m. Thursday on the same charge, but police said the 15-year-old had fled the scene and was only identified later.

Detective Lt. Kenneth Watson said that the 14-year-old victim and the 13-year-old who was arrested got into a fistfight at Meadowbrook Apartments on Bridge Road and the 13-year-old allegedly hit the victim repeatedly in the face with a skateboard.

The 15-year-old allegedly jumped into the fray, assaulted the victim and was charged with same crime as the alleged skateboard-wielder because they “acted together” in the fight, Watson said.

He said the victim suffered “substantial injuries” and was eventually taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield because he likely needed plastic and dental surgery. Watson said he did not know the boy’s condition and further information about the victim was unavailable because he is a juvenile.

Watson said the identification and arrest of the second teen was the result of an investigation using social media, eyewitness interviews and a line-up using photos presented to witnesses.
