Theresa Perrea of Southampton hit by van in Easthampton rotary

Theresa Perrea of 16 Geryk Court was in a crosswalk when she was hit by a van driven by Jason A. Tourigny, 36, of Chicopee, according to police. Easthampton Police Sgt. Chris Patenaude said police cited Tourigny for a crosswalk violation.

Tourigny told police that he did not see Perrea in the crosswalk before his van struck her, according to an accident report.

Jessica DiPietro of Easthampton said she witnessed the accident and said Perrea was conscious but did not get up after she was hit by the van.

A hospital spokeswoman confirmed that Perrea was being treated Tuesday afternoon and said her condition was undetermined. She was later released from the hospital.

DiPietro said that Perrea, who is the president of the Easthampton Historical Society, requested she drive to her home in Southampton to alert her husband about the accident. He could not be reached by phone because he was working in the yard.

In an email to the Gazette, DiPietro wrote that Perrea appeared to be gardening and raking leaves in Pulaski Park at the center of the rotary where Main, Pleasant and Northampton streets meet when she stepped off the curb and was hit by a commercial van.

The van driver, later identified by police as Tourigny, immediately stopped and called 911 and was visibly upset, according to DiPietro. DiPietro and a nurse driving by stopped and stayed with Perrea, who was knocked onto her back and bleeding, until emergency responders arrived and took her to the hospital.
