Fire forces three people from Northampton home

Deputy Fire Chief David Gagne said Sunday that firefighters were dispatched to the two-story home around 11:15 p.m. and spent about 90 minutes extinguishing the blaze.

“The fire was held to the void space between the ceiling and roof,” Gagne said.

Three fire engines, two ambulances, one command vehicle and 13 firefighters were on scene. Their work included cutting a hole in the roof to release heat and gases building up, and extinguishing the blaze. Gagne said this went smoothly, as much of the roof system remains intact. Weather never became a factor for firefighters.

The residents didn’t request Red Cross assistance, instead they planned to stay with relatives, Gagne said. They all got out safely with no injuries.

The only person injured was a firefighter who suffered a minor hand injury. Gagne said this firefighter is expected to be back at work in about a week.

While putting out the fire, firefighters used tarps to protect belongings and minimize water damage inside the home.

Gagne said there is no cost estimate for the extent of damage the fire caused, though the home remains uninhabitable.
