Somerset police officer faces drug charges
SOMERSET (AP) — A Somerset police officer is facing charges for allegedly knocking on doors at an elderly housing complex, asking for personal information, and offering to collect and dispose of expired prescription medication.
Ricardo Pavao was arraigned on Wednesday after turning himself in on drug and larceny charges. Police say the 33-year-old officer went to the housing complex Sunday without telling a supervisor.
The Herald News reports Pavao allegedly knocked on doors and told residents he was checking their emergency information. A 92-year-old man told investigators he handed Pavao three prescription drug bottles after the officer offered to dispose of expired prescription drugs.
A resident notified police after becoming suspicious.
Pavao told investigators he threw the drugs away and said he was trying to show some initiative after poor work reviews.
