Box truck crash causes injuries, delays on Route 91 in Whately
WHATELY — A box truck that went off Interstate 91 north and hit a tree in the median scattered debris on the highway and sent two occupants to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Wednesday afternoon, state police said.
Trooper Matthew Baird said police were still investigating why the truck went off the road around 4:45 p.m. He said the accident caused the box unit on the back of the truck to collapse and scatter its contents “everywhere.” The truck was reportedly carrying construction equipment.
The driver and a passenger were both taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital, he said. He was unable to provide their names.
The accident caused rush hour traffic on the interstate to be backed up and significantly slowed for a few miles until police left the scene at about 8 p.m., he said.
A second accident took place soon after the first, about a mile south of the box truck accident, possibly caused by the traffic, Baird said. It was minor and no one was injured, he said.
