Fiery crash sends Northampton woman to hospital Tuesday with minor injuries, disrupts traffic on Damon Road
NORTHAMPTON — A two-vehicle accident and car fire sent a 57-year-old Northampton woman to the hospital and disrupted Tuesday evening traffic on Damon Road.
According to police, about 5:09 p.m. Ilia Cornier-Rivera, of 87 Laurel Park, was driving north near 212 Damon Road when she rear-ended a vehicle stopped in front of her driven by John Gallagher, 29, of 99L Southpoint Drive, Amherst.
Cornier-Rivera’s car, a 2003 Pontiac, burst into flames following the impact and was severely damaged, according to police.
Gallagher declined medical treatment and was able to drive his car away from the scene, police said.
Cornier-Rivera’s car was totalled and she was transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital, where she was treated and released, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
A section of Damon Road was blocked for about 30 minutes while the fire was extinguished and Cornier-Rivera’s car was towed away, according to the Northampton Fire Department.
No citations were issued, according to the accident report.
