Tarantula rescued in NY
AMITYVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — It’s not what you’d call “itsy bitsy.”
A resident of Amityville found a tarantula in a plastic container on his front porch.
Suffolk County SPCA Chief of Department Roy Gross said Thursday the female rose-haired tarantula is about 4 inches wide.
Gross says the venomous bite could have hurt someone. The lid wasn’t on very tight.
It was removed by investigators with spider experience.
The tarantula was a piece of cake compared to a 2007 case. Gross says the Ornate Golden Baboon spider had big fangs, was “angry” and could jump several feet.
The tarantula is now at a sanctuary in Massachusetts.
It’s legal to own the hairy-looking creatures. But Gross says that, personally, he’d much rather curl up in front of the TV with a dog or cat.
