West Springfield neighborhood evacuated

WEST SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Homes in one West Springfield neighborhood have been evacuated as a precaution while authorities clear a derailed train tanker car carrying a flammable liquid from the area.

About 25 to 30 buildings were evacuated Friday morning following the Thursday night derailment. School buses took residents to a nearby school.

One of the two rail cars involved was empty but most recently contained a chemical called ethyl acetate, which is a product used in nail polish remover.

The other car was full of a flammable substance called butyraldehyde that is used in the production of plastics and rubber products.

Mayor Greg Neffinger says there are no signs of leaks.

CSX is investigating.
