Springfield stops pool activities after death

Superintendent Daniel Warwick called the Feb. 15 death at Kiley Middle School an “unspeakable tragedy” and warned that Monday’s return to school after the February break would be extremely difficult. Warwick said grief counselors will be on hand for staff and students.

Hampden District Attorney Mark Mastroianni tells The Republican that his office’s investigation is focusing on whether there was criminal negligence or recklessness.

Police say the boy died in a class with about 45 students and two teachers.

In a statement, Warwick said he’s “desperate” to understand what happened, so he can decide what to do next. But he cautioned that the process will take time.
