Jones Library in Amherst to re-install pay phone
Pay phones may be going the way of dinosaurs in a time when many people have cellphones and smartphones.
But this isn’t stopping Jones Library officials from having a pay phone installed at the side entrance to the Amity Street building.
“In the year that I have been working at the Jones, several patrons have come up to myself and library staff asking that the pay phone be re-installed,” said Library Director Sharon Sharry.
She said it is hard for staff to tell patrons that no phone is available nearby. The base monthly fee will be $75, with a 50 percent commission on any proceeds over $75. If less than $75 is collected, the library has to pay the difference.
“I am not looking to make money on the deal. I just want to provide this important library service,” Sharry said.
