University of Massachusetts students Seamus McNamara, right, holding a water line, and Chris Metz are part of the crew preparing the Mullins Center Monday for the Minutemen hockey team’s home opener against Michigan State on Oct. 18. The two students were working with the Mullins management company Global Spectrum, which was midway through a four-day process of installing the ice for the 2013-14 UMass hockey season. On Sunday, two layers of ice and three coats of white paint were laid down before the lines and logos could be applied. Those thin layers of ice protect the graphics and lines, some hand-painted, while the process of flooding and freezing builds up the playing surface.
