Photo Gallery: Everything in its place

Howard Clapp, who died in February, had lived in a house on Easthampton Road in Westhampton for about 80 years. Clapp loved gears, old clocks and anything colorful. He collected the tops to aerosol cans and arranged them perfectly on a covered tray so they would not collect dust. These teeth, which were his but were only worn once, were arranged just so, juxtaposed with these old keys in a particular fashion. After Clapp’s death, his good friend and neighbor, Tom Martin, took me to the home. I took many photos in the house, intrigued by Clapp’s careful compositions of things, which were placed and organized by colors, shapes and, sometimes, function. Clapp was not a hoarder but a collector, and it was a pleasure to walk through his home, not moving an item, while documenting what he saw in the world he lived in.
