This web in the dairy barn at Hartsbrook Farm in Hadley caught a beautiful milkweed seed during the heat wave last week. Beautiful to me, that is. Not much use to the spider. And even less use to the 80 or so cows in the barn getting their afternoon milking. I was there to illustrate a news story about alleviating heat stress on animals. But as I pondered how to shoot a graceful picture from the business end of a line of bovine bums, I caught a glimpse of the web and its catch. As I turned my attention, and my camera, away from the cows and toward the window, I wondered if the milking crew saw this as aimless wandering or purposeful investigation. Ultimately, I decided that the difference between dawdling and exploring is in the eye of the beholder. Just ask any 4-year-old.
