A dense pink carpet of spent blossoms surrounding this magnolia tree is what first caught my eye as I breezed by on Ventures Field Road in Northampton early last Friday morning. But what made me stop and watch were the blooms settling to the ground, almost one by one. As the sun rose, and the tree warmed, a light wind was just enough to make the petals jump ship to make way for new leaves. Later, that bed of decaying blossoms will just become a big mess. But for these few hours, and days, the rhythm of the falling petals seemed like a big clock marking the passing of spring.
