This colorfully decorated dashboard caught my eye on Union Street in Easthampton earlier this month. Ancient Japanese lore has it that a
person who makes 1,000 origami cranes will be granted a wish, or perhaps good luck, by a crane. I think 1,000 cranes would have filled this
tiny car to the brim but perhaps these are part of a larger collection that was given away. I once heard someone say, “There are two kinds
of people in the world: those who hang things from their mirror and those who don’t.” A solitary crane hanging from this mirror
puts the driver firmly in the latter group — but it almost seems like an afterthought.
