SPRINGFIELD — Sophomore Cady Lalanne looked more refreshed than rusty when he returned to the University of Massachusetts men’s basketball lineup in Saturday’s 78-73 overtime win against Elon.

Lalanne, who had been suspended for an altercation with a police officer on Dec. 1, was reinstated to practice on Friday.

That was his only practice since the Minutemen’s loss to Miami on Dec. 1. Lalanne had six points and six rebounds (five after intermission) to give UMass a lift.

“I thought he played very well in the second half,” Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg said.

Lalanne was not made available to the media after the game at the MassMutual Center.

VINSON FREE THROWS — Senior forward Terrell Vinson made his first 13 free throw attempts before missing his final try with five seconds left in overtime. The 13 makes were a career high for Vinson.

If the last one had gone in, Vinson would have tied the school record for most free throws without a miss in a single game. That mark is shared by Donta Bright who made 14 against Rhode Island in 1996 and Stephane Lasme who matched him against Duquesne in 2005.

CONTINUED SUCCESS — Sampson Carter’s 13 points and 11 rebounds gave him the first double-double of his career. His 11 rebounds were a career high.

“I think he just needed more minutes. He’s always been a kid who’s been productive in a certain amount of time,” Kellogg said. “With him being a little more ready than some of the young guys to start and be that secondary big guy, he’s had the opportunity to get more minutes, whether it’s on the wing or inside.”

NEXT UP — UMass will host Ohio about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the second half of a women’s and men’s doubleheader. The Minutewomen host Bowling Green at 5:30 p.m.

The Bobcats are the first Mid-American Conference basketball opponent this season for the Minutemen. UMass had to agree to play four MAC basketball games as part of the school’s agreement to join the conference as an auxiliary member in football.

Ohio (7-3) won its first six games, but has lost three of its last four including a 50-49 loss to Winthrop on Saturday.

MISCELLANEOUS — Freddie Riley’s second half free throw to complete a 3-point play was the first the senior guard has attempted this season. ... The win improved Kellogg’s career record to 65-65 as a head coach. ... UMass is now 44-24 all-time at the MassMutual Center. ... There was a moment of silence before the game in memory of the victims of Friday’s school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
