Arbor Day artwork on display during Amherst Art Walk Thursday
AMHERST — Artwork by Amherst and Pelham schoolchildren to celebrate Arbor Day will be on display at the Northampton Cooperative Bank gallery, 253 Triangle St., as part of the monthly Amherst Art Walk today.
The event at the bank gallery, which runs from 5 to 6 p.m., will unveil the 13 winners in the poster contest selected by members of the Amherst Public Shade Tree Committee.
The contest gave fourth, fifth and sixth graders an opportunity to create posters with the theme “Celebrate a Tree.”
The winners will get their works on the second annual calendar, for 2014, with proceeds going toward the planting of new public shade trees in Amherst.
Prizes for winners also include gift certificates, tickets and, for the top winner, a $50 prize from the Garden Club of Amherst.
In addition, the best fifth-grade poster will be entered into a state Arbor Day poster contest sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.
Tree-themed refreshments will be served and free Redbud bareroot whips from Amherst Nurseries will be handed out.
