Former UMass student Weilang Wang denies rape
NORTHAMPTON — A Hadley man and former University of Massachusetts student pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Hampshire Superior Court to charges of rape and indecent assault and battery.
Weilang Wang, 18, of 36 Greenleaf Drive, Apt. 40, is accused of raping a UMass student who briefly fell asleep in his dorm room in February.
He was released on $7,500 bail already posted in Eastern Hampshire District Court in Belchertown.
Wang, a Chinese national, was arraigned with the aid of an interpreter before Judge Bertha Josephson.
While free, Wang must stay 100 yards away from the alleged victim, abide by an existing trespass order from UMass and surrender his passport.
According to campus police, the alleged victim reported the attack Feb. 19 at 11:14 p.m., just a few minutes after it allegedly took place. Wang was arraigned in Belchertown the following day.
Alcohol was not a factor, according to campus police.
Wang’s arrest came about four months after another UMass student reported she was raped by four men, none of whom was a UMass student, in her dorm room.
Wang is due back in court Sept. 11 for a pre-trial hearing.
