Teach-in at UMass to focus on 'corporatization' of public education

A teach-in planned for Friday at the University of Massachusetts Amherst will explore the impact of corporate-led education reform, including such issues as “high stakes” testing, budget cuts, mounting student debt and political attacks on public schools and teachers, organizers say.

The free “Education for Democracy, Not Corporatocracy” event is scheduled for Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Cape Cod Lounge at the UMass Campus Center. The teach-in is hosted by the UMass student/faculty group Can’t be Neutral.

Speakers will include Peter Taubman, a professor at the City University of New York who has written about standardized testing and resegregation of public schools; UMass lecturer Barbara Madeloni, who has spoken out against a new teacher evaluation tool being developed by Stanford University and the Pearson company; and David Stovall, a professor of education and African-American studies at the University of Illinois Chicago, who will join the discussion via Skype.
