New hires ‘keep the campus running’ at UMass

Jeri Baker, the new transportation services director, replaces the retired Al Byam, while Raymond Jackson, who has been with UMass for 17 years, is the new physical plant director, taking over for Pat Daly, who retired in January. Tom Shaw, who has spent 15 years at UMass facilities planning, will lead the design and construction services.

Juanita Holler, associate vice chancellor for facilities and campus services, said in a statement that UMass is appointing talented people to critical positions.

“These are the people who literally keep the campus running,” Holler said.

Baker comes to UMass after five years as assistant director of parking and transportation services for the University of Texas Austin campus, with her previous experience as a parking garage supervisor in Texas and a station manager and operations manager for FedEx.

“I cherish the ability to work for a department that values diversity, inspires hard work and rewards employees with merit-based growth,” Baker said.

Byam, who retired in May, was replaced on an interim basis by transportation services operations manager Glenn Barrington.

Jackson, who has served as interim physical plant director since Daly’s retirement, was first hired as power plant manager in 1997. He is formerly an engineering officer in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Berkley, and has served as assistant director of utilities on campus for the past 11 years.

Shaw has been the interim director of design and construction services since March, when facilities and campus services were reorganized. Before coming to UMass in 1998, Shaw was a regional manager for engineering and construction for Raytheon Support Services Co., a project engineer for the city of Burlington, Vt. and a project manager for the Federal Aviation Administration.

All three began their new duties Aug. 18.

They were selected following the work of search committees chaired by Daly, Dennis Swinford, director of campus planning, and Niels la Cour, a UMass senior planner.
