Disturbance on downtown Amherst street leads to arrests of two UMass students
AMHERST — Two University of Massachusetts students, including one who allegedly jumped on the back of a police officer, were arrested early Friday morning.
Amanda Joy Balling, 18, of Dix Hills, N.Y., and Allyson J. Kanter, 19, of Cotuit, were arrested at 12:01 a.m. at Main and North Whitney streets on charges of domestic assault and battery and disorderly conduct after officers responded to break up a fight, said Detective Jamie Reardon.
While officers were attempting to take the two women into custody, Balling leaped onto the back of an officer and will face charges of assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest, Reardon said.
The officer was not injured during the incident, Reardon said.
Eyewitnesses told police the incident began as a verbal altercation between the two women before it became physical.
