The accident and subsequent accident reconstruction investigation closed the highway between exits 27 and 28 from about 3 a.m. until 1 p.m. Sunday.

“The (truck) for some unknown reason went into the median, it crashed and was engulfed in flames,” said State Police spokesman Thomas B. Murphy. He said the cause will be difficult to determine because of the extent of the damage. “It could have been medical, the driver could have fallen asleep, we may never know,” said Murphy.

Police identified the driver as Theodore Wilson, 33, and the passenger as Eleanor Williams, 45, both from Birmingham, Ala.

Murphy said troopers assigned to the Massachusetts State Police Shelburne Falls Barracks responded about 3 a.m. to a report of a crash at the 46.4 mile marker between exits 27 and 28. When troopers arrived, the vehicle was engulfed in flames.

Murphy said it is not known where their rig was coming from or travelling to.
