Sunderland police cruiser damaged during high-speed chase on Route 116
SUNDERLAND — A year-old police cruiser will need repairs after it crashed into a utility pole as it chased a speeding vehicle this past weekend.
Police arrested Daniel Dickinson, 19, of Poplar Hill Road, Whately, on charges of speeding, failure to stop for police and operating a motor vehicle to endanger, according to Officer Evan Golann.
At 1:29 a.m. Sunday, Officer Josh Wingler was monitoring traffic on Route 116 from a rest area by Snowzees bar when he clocked Dickinson in his 2006 Hyundai Sonata speeding by at 89 mph.
Police pursued Dickinson’s vehicle northbound onto Old Amherst Road and left onto Russell Street.
At 259 Russell St., the suspect’s vehicle hit and split a pole, then crashed into a tree and spun around. The cruiser, a 2012 Chevy Tahoe, then sideswiped the same pole, damaging the vehicle’s passenger side door.
Dickinson’s car was destroyed.
According to Golann, the cruiser doesn’t appear to have frame damage and can be repaired. Town Administrator Margaret Nartowicz declined to comment on the crash, saying she did not know yet what the cost to fix the cruiser would be to the town.
