Mountain Goat will close Northampton store after nearly 24 years on Main Street
NORTHAMPTON — The Mountain Goat, a Main Street store that specializes in outdoor wear and equipment, will close Saturday, ending nearly 24 years of business.
Co-owner Mary Colwell said Friday the store could not compete with Internet retailers, big-box stores and warmer winters. On Friday afternoon, her husband, A.J. LaFleur, was busy as a sale brought customers in. He declined at the time to discuss the closing.
In a text message Friday night, Colwell thanked customers and employees and wrote: “The time has come for us to move on. We feel privileged and grateful to have been a part of such a wonderful and vibrant community these many years.”
The Mountain Goat has had several homes downtown and occupies space at 189 Main St., which Colwell and LaFleur purchased in 2004 for $950,000.
When the store opened in 1989, it was partially owned by Sally Mole and Sandy Kelly, who owned stores by the same name in Williamstown and in Manchester, Vt. Colwell said Mole and Kelly no longer have any interest in the Northampton store. In 2008, LaFleur and Colwell opened a store in Hanover, N.H., which will also close.
