Bonnie Katusich resigns from Easthampton School Committee

— School leaders are seeking candidates to appoint to the School Committee for the remainder of the calendar year following the resignation last week of committee member Bonnie L. Katusich.

In a Feb. 21 letter to the school board, Katusich cited family issues as the reason for her immediate resignation. “I do not feel I can both be an effective committee member and be an effective parent at this moment,” she wrote. “And clearly my family must come first.”

Katusich, who was re-elected to a second term on the board in 2011, said she is proud of the school district and has enjoyed “sharing my experience and knowledge” on the board.

“As a parent of a high school, middle school and grade school student, I will continue to promote our district, applaud our administrators, support our staff,” she wrote. Katusich added that she hopes to run for the school board again, “once I feel I am able to dedicate the time I feel is necessary to be a truly effective member.”

Superintendent Nancy Follansbee praised Katusich as an “active and involved” member of the School Committee.

“We’re sad to see her have to step down,” Follansbee said. “But we’re pleased she is interested in resuming her place on the committee once she can devote the appropriate amount of time.”

The School Committee and the City Council will schedule a joint meeting to appoint a board member to serve through the end of December, Follansbee said. Registered Easthampton voters who are interested in applying for the seat must do so in writing by March 6.

Compensation for the position will be $750, according to a posting Monday at school department headquarters.

Letters should be sent Follansbee at 50 Payson Ave., 2nd floor, Easthampton, MA 01027.
