Icy road conditions cause multiple accidents on Route 91
The light snow that fell Tuesday night created very slippery conditions on a section of Interstate Route 91 south, causing numerous accidents, according to state police at the Northampton barracks.
Local news sources report multiple accidents took place during the evening near the Northampton/Holyoke line, including one car that rolled over, landing on its roof, and others that spun off the highway or into the guardrails. Several state police cruisers responded to the accidents.
According to state police, about 8:25 p.m. a 2002 Kia Rio traveling south on I-91 just north of Exit 17 near the Easthampton-Holyoke line rolled over onto its roof. The driver, whose identity was not released because she is a minor, was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. State police described her injuries as serious.
A 19-year-old male passenger in the car was not injured, according to state police.
