∎ Officers for the teenage square dance group, the Shirts ‘n’ Skirts, organized this week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Abner Adams of Florence, chairmen of the club for Calico Couples. Don Parsisson and Cindy Bronson were elected chairmen. Other officers are Linda and Jeff Holman, Penny Pomeroy, Tom Gutowski, Chris Powers and Wayne Beebe.
∎ Maurice Alexander of Florence today purchased Rahar’s Inn, known by college students from coast to coast, for $47,000. The sale is subject to real estate and water and sewer taxes to the City of Northampton totaling $10,648.79.

∎ Henry DeTurck, longtime owner of Cahill and Hodges, downtown’s last traditional men’s clothing store, was honored recently at a surprise retirement party at the Hotel Northampton. DeTurck, 59, of 48 Hickory Drive, Florence, had worked at the store for 20 years, and owned it since 1970.
∎ A four-year veteran of the Northampton Fire Department has been promoted to captain effective Feb. 14. The City Council voted Thursday to appoint Edgar J. Lesko Jr., 32, of 100 West Farms Road, to the position. Lesko has been with the Northampton Fire Department since 1984.

∎ Snow may have kept the crowds down, but it failed to put a damper on the enthusiasm, optimism and determination manifested at the inauguration Friday of John V. Lombardi as chancellor of the University of Massachusetts. Approximately 2,000 people attended the colorful ceremony in the Mullins Center.
∎ The Northampton City Council has approved the appointments of Judith Fine, Leslie Stein, and David Narkewicz, to the new Transportation and Parking Commission, a recently created city board.
