SUV overturns on I-91, injuring 21-year-old driver from Hadley
NORTHAMPTON — State Police are investigating the cause of an accident on the northbound side of Interstate 91 Wednesday night that sent a 21-year-old Hadley man to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with unspecified injuries.
Trooper Thomas Murphy said that police found the driver trapped in his SUV, which was lying on its side against some trees off the shoulder of the highway in Northampton near the Hatfield line at 7:19 p.m.
Northampton Deputy Fire Chief John Davine said it took firefighters between 20 and 25 minutes to free the man from his vehicle using the Jaws of Life extrication tool.
Murphy said he did not know the extent of the man’s injuries and he declined to release his name. It appeared that only one vehicle was involved, he said.
Davine said a caller who reported the accident said the vehicle might have been on fire, but the first emergency responders said it was only steaming.
