Amherst middle school student hit by passing vehicle recovering
AMHERST — A middle school student struck by a passing vehicle after exiting a school bus on South East Street Friday afternoon is recuperating at home, according to school administrators.
The accident occurred at 2:43 p.m. near Fort River School.
School administrators posted updates on the school website on the student’s status a few hours after the accident. In the update, they said they would be offering counseling at the school for students who witnessed the accident or had questions and concerns about it.
“This is expectedly an upsetting incident and evokes strong feelings. Please feel free to come in with your child tomorrow morning for us to help support all of you. Counselors are also always available during school hours.”
Police have not yet released any information about the circumstances of the accident or the identity of the victim or driver of the vehicle.
Detective Richard MacLean said Sunday evening that no information was expected to be released about the accident until today, at the earliest. This would come from wither Detective Lt. Ronald Young, head of the detective bureau, or the Northwestern district attorney’s office, Mac-Lean said.
