Safe weighing 500 pounds, containing 16 guns stolen in Springfield
SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Police say thieves couldn’t break into a safe containing 16 guns they found in a Springfield home, so they just hauled off the entire 500-pound safe.
A department spokesman says someone broke into a home in the city’s Sixteen Acres neighborhood on Thanksgiving day and took the safe. The homeowner reported the theft when he came home that night.
Because of the weight involved, police believe at least two people were involved.
The safe was later found, broken open and stripped of all weapons or ammunition.
Police tell The Republican the guns included rifles and semi-automatic handguns.
Police are concerned that the guns will make their way into the hands of criminals.
