— Construction crews replacing the Kennedy Road Bridge over Roberts Meadow Brook are five months ahead of schedule.

The project began in July and was expected to shut down Kennedy Road, which connects Chesterfield and Audubon roads, to through traffic for up to a year.

An early finish would be welcome news for drivers who have been detoured for the last six months, including Hampshire Regional School District students from Williamsburg, Goshen and Chesterfield.

The $725,700 project calls for rebuilding the bridge to fix a structural deficiency and a deck in bad condition. The new bridge, at 24 feet, is much wider than the old one.

Kennedy Road is located in the northwest corner of the city and connects Chesterfield and Audubon roads. The road will be closed to traffic except to residents and others who have business along the 1¾-mile stretch.

Constructed in 1925 and rebuilt 30 years later in 1955, the bridge was inspected two years ago and found to be unsafe for large vehicles to cross.
