Political argument leads to arrest in Hadley

Leon Szymborn, 53, of 64 East Hadley St., was arrested on charges of assault, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after engaging in a political argument with a customer at his home business, Leon’s Auto Sales, police said.

Chief Dennis Hukowicz said police received a call from a young woman at Szymborn’s business around 6:30 p.m.

“They were in a discussion over political parties and he tried to block the exit when she tried to leave,” Hukowicz said. It appears Szymborn did not touch the woman, he said.

By the time police arrived, the woman had made her way outside, Hukowicz said. Still, Szymborn tried to advance toward her, according to the chief.

“She was scared and ran away while the officers were there,” Hukowicz said. “When they tried to bring him into custody he resisted.”

On Thursday, Szymborn said his lawyer had instructed him not to speak publicly about the incident.

“It’s something really unfortunate, but I cannot say too much,” he said.

Northampton attorney John Drake, who said he likely will represent Szymborn on the case, also declined to comment.
