William Voight, Peter J. Dowers deny alleged theft of antique silver valued at $200,000 from Westhampton home

William Voight, 27, of Westfield, pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Hampshire Superior Court to a charge of receiving stolen property over $250. Peter Dowers, 23, of Chicopee, pleaded not guilty Sept. 26 to charges of felony daytime breaking and entering, larceny over $250 and receiving stolen property over $250.

Voight was released on his own recognizance. Dowers was ordered held on $5,000 cash bail or $50,000 surety.

According to court records, about $200,000 worth of antique silver items were reported stolen from a Laurel Hill Road home on June 4, 2011.

Ten days later, police obtained a search warrant for Dowers’ home and car and found silver items matching the descriptions of some of the items reported stolen along with a pair of shoes that matched an imprint left at the site of the break-in, according to court records.

On July 19, 2011, police investigating stolen jewelry at local precious metal buyers noticed silver flatware at the Gold Deposit store at the Holyoke Mall that matched descriptions of some of the items reported stolen, according to court records.

Those items were sold to the store by Voight, who told police that Dowers asked him to sell the items for him because he did not have adequate identification, the court papers said.

Voight allegedly told police he was aware the items were stolen, and received $300 from Dowers for selling them.

Items recovered from Dowers’ home and the Gold Deposit were identified as stolen from the Westhampton home, according to court papers.

If Dowers posts bail, he is required to reside with his parents, keep curfew as determined by the Probation Department, submit to electronic monitoring, have no contact with the alleged victims and stay away from their residence, and avoid drugs and alcohol and submit to random screenings.

Both men are due back in court for pretrial hearings Nov. 29.
