Marisa Melideo, a pre-law and art student at Hampshire College in Amherst, took a crash course in East Coast style when she moved from the sunshine of Los Angeles to the unpredictable weather of New England. The Style Stop team caught up with her in downtown Northampton.

Relearning the ropes: When I came up here I totally had to relearn how to dress because I’d never lived anywhere below 50 degrees. ... I found, in the East Coast, with layering, it’s important to have key pieces. I found this coat at the Salvation Army.

what she likes: I love to wear leather gloves and boots, and black top to bottom, but I love crazy lipstick. ... I’m obsessed with shoes, I wear heels every day.

Style advice: Have good basics you can depend on, then mix it up with unique pieces you can find other places — classic shapes and colors, with unexpected details.

HER go-to pieces: If I’m in a rush, black, white and stripes are my go-tos. I’m really into lounge pants, pants with a tapered ankle.

HER Inspiration: I do costuming for theater and dance productions at Hampshire, so I get a lot of my inspiration from theatrical productions. I’ve done makeup for TV and photo shoots. I thought it would be something I was interested in so I took classes in high school.
