Quincy psychiatric ward for seniors temporarily shut down due to filthy conditions

QUINCY — State regulators temporarily stopped admissions to Quincy Medical Center’s psychiatric ward for seniors after inspectors found filthy conditions there.

The Boston Globe reports (http://b.globe.com/13bGntM) that inspectors also found unattended patients during a surprise visit on May 23.

The state closed admissions to the unit for about a week.

Inspectors said patients were being ignored and left in bed without covers while wearing only hospital gowns. In one room, a woman in bed was covered in feces while her calls for help were unanswered.

Hospital leaders acknowledged serious problems in a June 11 letter to the state, which said some staff members had been fired. The letter said remaining staffers will undergo ongoing training.

The unit is licensed for 22 beds and typically serves patients over 55 with cognitive disabilities or dementia.
