50 Years Ago

■ Four generations of Cahillanes celebrated the 84th birthday of Stephen Cahillane Sr. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Crawley of Olive St. on Saturday evening. It was also the birthdays of two grandchildren, Theresa and Joseph Crawley.

■ Mrs. Edward Skroski, president of the Northampton Jaycee-ettes, announced today that the Jaycee-ettes have voted to promote a new type of fundraising project this year. Bozo the Clown has been engaged to appear as featured star in a children’s program planned by the group for the latter part of January. Final arrangements for the Bozo show will be announced in the near future.

25 Years Ago

■ The Hampshire County Commission Thursday unanimously approved Anne Moran as the acting county administrator for the next few months to help keep the new form of county government on track. Moran’s appointment marks the first step toward the county having its first full-time administrator.

■ Thousands of spectators are expected to attend the fourth annual First Night celebration in Northampton today beginning at 2 p.m. A new twist to the festivities here will occur when a steel ball “approximately four feet in diameter and covered with lights” will slowly be cranked up a 28-foot mast atop the Hotel Northampton during the final minute of 1988.

■ Kevin R. Croake was officially sworn in as Easthampton’s new fire chief on Monday, a role the 29-year veteran described as “a big step” in a career that has spanned three decades. Croake’s wife, Sharon, pinned her husband’s new badge to his uniform moments after City Clerk Barbara L. LaBombard issued the oath of office.

■ The Agriculture Department significantly upgraded the country’s defenses against mad cow disease Tuesday, banning meat from cows that can’t walk or stand on their own and promising to speed up creation of a nationwide animal tracking system.
