VAN TRIPS — A trip to the Eastern States Expo is Sept. 23 at 11 a.m.

CURMUDGEONS — The Easthampton Curmudgeon & Procrastination Society meets Sept. 26 at 12:30 p.m.



A series of 10 free workshops for caregivers are now taking place until Nov. 20 offered by The Dementia Initiative at Highland Valley Elder Services, 320 Riverside Drive, Northampton.

Workshops run from 4 to 6 p.m.

Topics include caregiver stress; creating opportunities for pleasure, play, stimulation and satisfaction; enjoying better relationships with family members; legal planning; preventing falls; creating advance medical directives; hiring and supervising help at home; using adult day health programs; choosing and using long-term skilled nursing facilities and more. DEMENTIA AND ALZHEIMER’S — A presentation by Susan Chapman-Brooks, an RN, on Sept. 26 at 10 a.m. will discuss the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s; call 587-1228.

EXERCISE — A new program, titled Exercise and Open Your Mind, will be held on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to noon in October at the center.

The program builds on research about the benefits of exercising our minds and keeping them as flexible as we can. This “cognitive fitness” class challenge ourselves to open our minds, and learn to look at our everyday beliefs and situations in new ways.

The cost for this program is $20 per month for Northampton seniors, and $25 for out of town participants and participants ages 55-59. Sign up at the Senior Center.

CIRCUIT TRAINING — Senior Circuit Training, a new exercise program which will be offered for five weeks beginning on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., beginning Oct. 1. Circuit training reduces the impact of arthritis, osteoporosis and other bone and joint problems, and is a good way to incorporate cardio, strength training, and core exercises to help reduce muscle loss and increase balance.

The class is open to those 55 and older. Classes are $40 per month for Northampton seniors or $45 per month for ages 55-59 and seniors from out of town. Sign up at the Senior Center.
