Each year, from August through October, players and coaches gather for gridiron action in the Northampton Youth Football League.

About 90 determined youngsters in third through eighth grades, divided into three, two-grade groups called the peewees, the juniors and the seniors, were put through their paces by their no-nonsense coaches during a recent Tuesday practice at Ryan Road School.

The two-hour, three-days-per-week practices prepare them for their weekend games against other area leagues.

Diana Szynal, of Hatfield, who is the treasurer for the league and has served on the board for nine years, was busy preparing for a chrysanthemum sale, one of the fundraisers necessary to help support the program. She said she thinks the league brings together a cross-section of the community, and it helps create brotherhood and a work ethic in its participants. Her son, Henry Higgins, plays on the senior team.

Josh Tudryn, of Hadley, who is the nephew of the late, long-time Northampton High School football coach Frank Tudryn, coaches the juniors.

“In football, if the line doesn’t block, it doesn’t matter how good your running back is,”Tudryn said. “It teaches you that you all have a job do.”

He said because of that, it requires more practice time than other sports and that the kids get healthier and stronger as a result.
