Lou & Lucy’s Leftovers: Elivs on a Stick
Lou Groccia and Lucy Pickett, the Gazette’s self-described food experts, can’t stop chewing the fat.
The summer season is here and the fairs and festivals are too. That means it’s time for my annual weird fair food roundup.
Every year, vendors try harder than the last to come up with the new, the different and — dare I say — the disgusting. 2013 is no different.
How about a little or a lot of some deep-fried bubble gum? Yes, bubble gum dipped in batter and fried. Can you still blow bubbles?
Along those lines are deep-fried jelly beans, or deep-fried cereal (like Trix and Cocoa Puffs.) I also came across deep-fried Kool-Aide and Pepsi.
How do they do that? Why do they do that?
How: They inject the flavored syrup into the bread dough batter and plop it into the bubbling hot oil. Voila! Something new and weird to pedal to the thousands of people looking to be the first to try the new treat.
Why: I have no idea.
Other things slightly less off-putting are the deep-fried pineapple upside-down cake and deep-fried salsa. Those sound almost edible. And I actually like the idea of white or dark chocolate covered bacon. What’s not to like about that? Salty, sweet and chocolatey.
One thing that caught my eye was Elvis on a Stick. A deep-fried banana-battered peanut butter cup with bacon on a stick, of course. I guess Elvis liked all that stuff, thus the name, Elvis on a Stick. Gotta love the name.
I think you have to travel out west to try this one — chocolate covered scorpion on a stick — or not.
You have to give the fair food folks credit, they always manage to find — year after year— more outrageous ways to make food and sell it to the masses.
