Jane Cornell Smithwick and Herschel Strauss Shohan were married on June 2, 1963 in the Smithwick family home, Chester, S.C.

Officiating was Dr. Julian Cave, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Chester.

The bride’s sisters, Marie Parker and Frieda Smithwick, were attendants. Her brother, Jim Smithwick, sang “Entreat Me Not To Leave Thee,” a biblical text, accompanied on the piano by her high school choral director, Mrs. J. Spratt Moore. Ann Parker, age 3, was to have served as flower girl, but she came down with the mumps that morning.

Present were the bride’s parents, her two older brothers, the groom’s mother, friends and relatives from Boston, New York City, Washington, D.C., Oneonta, N.Y., and neighbors.

After the service the couple left for Ocho Rios and Kingston, Jamaica.

They lived in Greenwich Village, New York City.

The bride earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Wake Forest College, Wake Forest, N.C. She did post-graduate studies in art and art education at the University of Georgia, in Athens, Ga. She taught high school art in Atlanta, Ga., and in Orleans, France. Her experience also includes work with the New York State Employment Office in New York City.

Herschel Shohan’s bachelor’s degree in English is from Oberlin College; his master’s and doctorate in American and 17th-Century English literature are from Columbia University. His work history includes a half-century of advertising and marketing, and college teaching.

The Shohans have lived in Amherst since 1985. They are the parents of Jennine Shohan Pommier of Summit, N.J., and Benjamin Smithwick Shohan, of Amherst, and the grandparents of Claire and Emily Pommier.
