A Look Back

∎ Herbert L. Childs, 70, local painting contractor for many years, died Friday night at Dickinson Hospital. Mr. Childs operated a painting business here for several decades going into partnership with his son, George M. Childs of Haydenville to form H. L. Childs & Son 15 years ago.

∎ Atty. and Mrs. Alvertus D. Morse of 76 Bancroft Road will sail April 10 aboard the Leonardo da Vinci for Spain. They expect to spend two months touring Spain, France, Switzerland, Luxembourg and England, returning June 12 aboard the Nieuw-Amsterdam from Southampton.

∎ Complete with an elaborately decorated horseshoe bar, a dance floor and enough beer to supply a ballpark, the Beta Kappa Phi nightclub at the University of Massachusetts was one of the hottest bars in the area — until last night, when police raided the house and put an end to an entrepreneur’s dream.

∎ Shock and sadness are not the only emotions that parishioners of the Sacred Heart Church in Easthampton are experiencing at the news that their school may be closing. Parishioners want to know why the option, now dead, of unifying the Sacred Heart School with the Notre Dame-Immaculate Conception School was not discussed with them.

∎ The state should ease the new bilingual education law, consider a moratorium on new charter schools and postpone expanding the MCAS test to include science and history, a House panel is recommending. The recommendations are included in a draft report from a task force on education appointed by House Speaker Thomas Finneran.

∎ Lillian L. Aubrey, 98, known locally and across Europe as Young at Heart Chorus star “Diamond Lil,” died April 7 in Leeds. “Lil was the icon of the group,” recalled director Bob Cilman. “When we went to Europe, her image appeared everywhere.”
