50 Years Ago

∎ The School Building Committee voted last night to add $124 to the construction cost of the new Florence Junior High School, which will enable it to provide the school with a sound-proofed record room.

∎ Legitimate theater seems assured of another year at Mountain Park Casino in Holyoke as a public fundraising drive is within sight of its goal. Funds have been raised by Pioneer Valley Theater Foundation Inc., headed by Richard Whiting.

25 Years Ago

∎ Early morning Easter churchgoers were greeted by messages scrawled in spray paint on two Northampton and one Hadley church yesterday. The words “De-throne the male Gods” were painted on the steps of one of the churches.

∎ Calvin Coolidge’s electric horse is back in harness and on its way to Iowa this week. The horse is being lent by Forbes Library to the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library-Museum, where it will join some 200 other rare mementos associated with the first 39 presidents of the United States.

∎ The winter may have been expensive, but it also carried a silver lining. The city is poised to collect about $76,000 on its snow insurance policy, which cost the city an up-front $12,000 investment.

∎ Three-term City Councilor Frances C. Volkmann, who has represented Ward 2 for six years, announced Thursday that she is not seeking re-election, and Ann M. Courtney, the ward’s School Committee representative, announced her candidacy for the council seat.
