∎ The number of people who were born in Hampshire County during the past decade far exceeded the number who died, according to a special government report released recently. The ratio of births to deaths was 2.2 to 1.
∎ At the regular meeting of the Leonard Club, to be held Thursday at Hotel Northampton, Dr. Donald B. Rogers will discuss “Skiing Adventures in Europe.” He recently returned from a tour of several European ski areas including Davos in Switzerland and Kitzbuhl, St. Anton, and Innsbruck areas in Austria.

∎ Parking in downtown Northampton may be bad now. But starting Wednesday, it’s going to become a whole lot worse. Two major construction projects will mean the loss of as many as 225 public parking spaces for most of the spring and summer.
∎ Tighe & Bond Inc., the civil-environmental engineering firm, is leaving Easthampton — probably by the end of the year, says the company’s chief engineer. David G. Healey said yesterday the company, which employs about 100 people, is buying space in the Holyoke-Springfield area.

∎ The Northampton Planning Board unanimously approved a plan for a 7,200-square-foot fitness center at Smith College that would be integrated between Scott and Ainsworth gymnasiums. Most of the new structure will sit atop the existing two gyms.
∎ The face of the former Northampton State Hospital is starting to change, as a set of old houses and garages was razed this month. The buildings are the first to come down as part of a massive renovation of the campus into a mixed housing and commercial community.
