Friends, neighbors, commercial buyers, homeowners on the lookout for furnishings, and people who were simply intrigued by the prospect of looking at someone else’s possessions — all were among those who turned out Sunday for the Elliot and Rosemary Offner estate auction at Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School in Northampton.

Elliot Offner, an artist and Smith College professor, died in October 2010, leaving behind an extensive collection of his own work, as well as objects he and his wife, Rosemary Offner, had gotten from other respected artists. In addition to the works of art, furnishings from the couple’s Northampton home on Washington Avenue were up for auction.

Also included were objects from the estates of a former Boston doctor and a Longmeadow resident.

The morning began with a two-hour preview of the auction, a time when visitors could peruse the artwork, furniture, jewelry, books, china, silverware and other assembled items.

By late morning, the room was packed. George Lewis, head of the Northampton auction firm, George Thomas Lewis & Co., was in charge of the proceedings. In addition to those present, more than 400 people participated in online bidding.

“I’m a local artist so he’s a very known entity,” said Piper Foreso of Northampton, as she talked about the appeal of the Offner estate. “Some of this work is quite compelling.”

Pam Lebeau of Chesterfield, who has worked for Lewis for 30 years, said that part of her job is to encourage people to sample the wares. “It’s my job to make sure everybody has something in their hands at all times,” she said.
