50 Years Ago
∎ The weekly record hop at St. Michael’s School will be held tomorrow night instead of Saturday. Phil Dee of WHYN will be disc jockey. The last record hop before Lent will be Tuesday night.
∎ Florence Bowling Alleys reports the high single contest winners for the past two weeks in the ladies handicap. The week ending Feb. 9, Pauline Vincent was the winner with a handicap score of 131. Week ending Feb. 16, Florence Frost with a handicap score of 138 was high.

∎ Jackson Street School first-grade teacher Mary Ellen Dunn is applying to be one of the state’s Lucretia Crocker Fellows for 1988. If chosen, she could spend the next academic year giving workshops to teachers here and across the state.
∎ The Hampshire County Commissioners yesterday agreed to study a proposal to hire three security guards to patrol the Hampshire County Courthouse and the Hall of Records. Walter Oliveira, head of courthouse maintenance, told the commissioners, “I’d hate to see the building locked to just one door and having everyone being searched.”

∎ Westover Air Reserve Base saw 850 members of the 439th Airlift Wing called to active duty Wednesday as part of the nation’s buildup for possible war with Iraq. The reservists are mostly from the 439th’s maintenance group.
∎ Amid continuing concern about low pay for day care workers, a local center plans to address that by phasing in a series of raises for its teachers. Sunnyside Child Care Center at 70 Paradise Road in January decided to increase hourly wages for its seven teachers by about 10 percent.
