50 Years Ago

The business interest of the Franklin County Press in Turners Falls has been acquired by Mr. and Mrs. Emil Lesenski of Elm Street, Hatfield. Mr. Lesenski has been associated with the printing business for 18 years, most recently with the Amherst Journal Record.

Time tarried today under the impetus of Old Man Winter. Victims of a sleet and ice storm last week, the hands of both the clock in the First Church steeple and that of Smith’s College Hall are locked into a position from which they will not be budged.

All public safety officers in Massachusetts hired after Jan. 1, 1988, must be non-smokers and will have to pass regular physical fitness tests to keep their jobs. Those requirements are part of the public employee pension reform act signed into law in December.

This weekend is the last chance for people to enter the annual Winter Festival snow sculpture contest. This year’s theme is “Be My Valentine.” So far, only two sculptures have been entered.

President Bush is shrugging off global anti-war protests, saying his role as a leader is to put national security first and confront Saddam Hussein. Yet the size of the protests, drawing millions to the streets of world capitals last weekend, complicated White House efforts to rally world support for disarming the Iraqi leader.

Bruce Caven is now the owner of The Breeders’ Choice Pet Shop at 492 Pleasant St. He bought the business in November from Edouard deVarennes of Florence, who had owned and operated Breeders’ Choice since November 1975.
