50 Years Ago

Richard D. Pickett, president of Northampton Commercial College, will be a guest at the Advertising Club of Springfield annual Awards Night tonight. He will receive a book from the club for the college library. It is a permanently bound copy of “The World of Advertising,” compiled by the magazine Advertising Age.

There were 12 cases of measles in Northampton during the past month. In addition, the following cases were reported: chicken pox, 1; dog bite, 2; German measles, 2; mumps, 2; scarlet fever, 1; strep sore throat, 1; and pathogenic E. Coli enteritis, 1.

More than 100 black students took over the New Africa House at the University of Massachusetts yesterday to protest officials’ response to two alleged racially motivated incidents last weekend. “The black community doesn’t feel safe,” said one student. “We want more black staff on the police department and more black administrators.”

The Northampton Police Department’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) officer, Brian C. Rust, was promoted to sergeant Thursday to upgrade his position and to assume the duties of the department’s safety officer. The safety officer slot opened when former Sgt. William J. Arnold retired last month.

Area police chiefs say they have not received any specific information from federal officials about potential terrorist attacks and are not recommending that people follow the advice listed in a government Web site to use duct tape or plastic sheeting to prepare for an attack.

After listening to impassioned pleas from parents opposed to the MCAS graduation requirement — and following a spirited two-hour debate — the Northampton School Committee voted 6-3 to defy the state law. The city is now the fifth community to challenge the state Department of Education, which has mandated that all high school students must pass the exam to receive a diploma.
