There will be a meeting of the newly organized radio-controlled model plane club at the Florence Inn on North Maple Street, Florence, tomorrow evening. Slides taken at the 1961 national radio-controlled model plane competition in Philadelphia will be shown. Another important business aspect will be to decide upon a name for the club.

Firefighters were called out in the wee hours this morning when a Cooper’s Dairy truck caught fire. They went to the Main Street, Florence, building of the firm from the Florence station. The fire was caused by a backfiring carburetor.

Joint efforts on the part of a parent group and arts center have netted a $3,000 state grant to plan multicultural arts programs for Northampton elementary schools. Although the grant is small, it should lead to a request for a much larger amount to carry out the ideas planned, said Lydia Nettler, a parent and co-founder of Advocates for Children’s Education (ACE).

Criminal charges were filed recently against three local bars, charging them with operating illegal poker machines at their establishments. The charges stem from an investigation that began last August and was conducted by state police attached to the Northwestern district attorney’s office.

Northampton school officials are busy crunching numbers this week to determine how reductions to three grants they learned about last week will translate to city schools. Though Gov. Mitt Romney did not cut any of the state money that directly funds local schools, Northampton still lost about $170,000 from its early literacy, enhanced school health services and community partnership grants.

City residents tuning in to “The West Wing” Wednesday heard mention of our fair city as the fictitious President Josiah “Jed” Bartlett, searched for a suitable Bible to use at his imminent inaugural swearing-in. “There’s a Bible in Northampton, Massachusetts,” he tells his top aide. The Bible belonged to famous preacher Jonathan Edwards, he says.
